These Banana flower fritters or vadas are an absolutely addictive tea-time snack. Delicious, crunchy from outside, and soft from inside.

One day while taking out veggies from the grocery bag I found some veggie which I am not even familiar with- Banana Flower. I have no idea what to do with that as I cannot not recall ANY recipe which requires Banana flower. Thanks to Mommy and  Google for helping me out. 😀 After going through so many recipes I decided to give this recipe a try and so I replaced chana dal with moong dal as per my liking and skipped few spices. Feel free to add more spices and chilies to make it extra hot.

You need patience if you are planning to make these Banana flower vadas or anything with Banana flower because the removing banana blossoms, cleaning them, and chopping them requires a bit of time. 😀 Take out some time from your schedule and do give this recipe a try and let me know how it turns out for you. 🙂

 
Serves 4
Ingredients:

  • ½ Cup whole moong dal, soaked
  • 1 Tsp black peppercorns
  • 1 Tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 Cup banana flower, finely chopped
  • ¼ Cup onion, finely chopped
  • ¼ Cup coriander leaves, chopped
  • 2 Green chilies, finely chopped
  • ½ inch ginger, finely chopped
  • 2 Tbsp besan
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • salt as required
  • Oil for deep frying

Recipe:
1- Coarsely grind soaked whole moong dal, blackpeppercorns, and cumin seeds together by using 2-3tbsp of water
2- Add chopped coriander leaves, onion, green chilies, ginger, besan, lemon juice, salt and bind them well. If required, add 2-3tbsp of water to bind the vada mixture
3- Shape them into vada
4- Heat oil in a deep pan and fry the vadas on medium flame until golden and crisp
5- Serve with tomato kethcup or mint-coriander chutney

Recipe:
Step 1- In a grinder jar, take soaked whole moong dal, black peppercorns, and cumin seeds. Using 2-3tbsp of water and grind the mixture coarsely and transfer to a large bowl or plate


Step 2-  Add the finely chopped banana flower, onion, coriander leaves, green chilies, ginger, lemon juice, and salt. If you want the vadas to be more hot then add 1tsp of red chili powder

Step 3- Add 1-2tbsp of water to the mixture bind them well and shape them into vadas

Step 4- Heat oil in a deep pan and when the oil is hot enough deep fry the vadas on medium flame until golden and crisp from both the sides. Remove the vadas to a paper napkin to remove excess oil


Serve hot with tomato ketchup or mint-coriander chutney and a cup of tea. 🙂
